Why Was YouTube Created?
If there was a dictionary entry for YouTube, it would say: “A user site where people can post videos on their own individual channels.”
YouTube is a great site where people can post videos. Three former PayPal employees created it in 2005, and in 2006 it was bought by Google for $1.65 billion dollars.
YouTube allows its users to post videos on the site and get feedback. It disallows users from posting copyrighted videos: for example, it doesn’t allow users to buy a video from Itunes and post it on YouTube. Users who do that are risking severe consequences and a ban on their account. The only other rule YouTube really has is that it will not allow users to post adult content that is only viewable to those for the age of 18, making it a website that all users can use.
However, users are allowed to make their own music videos, post their own thoughts, stories, and creative ideas. Many people will use youtube in their auditioning process for bands or for simply getting their name out their in the music world.
Even famous musicians like Eminem and Kj52 will have their music videos posted on the website.
So what is the site? How exactly do people use it?

- People can use it to advertise a website or product by video
- People can post videos of they’re doing daily
- People can communicate their thoughts and feelings into their videos
- People can post a music video of themselves performing
- People can post a video of their talents.
While it is mostly a music video site, people can use it for entertainment as well. Many will post daily. Some will make slide shows with music attached, showing pictures with the gentle hum of music in the background.
Some will even use the website to audition users. One person has recently become somewhat famous for auditioning his entire orchestra from YouTube — all 200 members! They recently preformed and practiced only three days before performing.
However, YouTube isn’t limited to musical and talented videos alone; it is also used for something else: advertising! YouTube is greatly used in advertisements, advertising the latest PC and the latest computers. Recently, YouTube has allowed you to add links to it, helping you sell your products and wares. YouTube users can also post videos about their products, demonstrating them in full detail, giving the link to where they can view, review, and buy the actual product. This is free advertising, as YouTube will not charge for posting those videos online!
In short, what is youtube? Youtube is used for watching videos, making videos, and having an outlet for your creativity. And as they say, “They sky’s the limit.” Enjoy Youtube!
